Summarecon Mal Serpong, shortened as SMS, in the Gading Serpong residential area is one of the favorite malls in Tangerang Selatan (South Tangerang city). Together with Summarecon Digital Center, a.k.a. SDC Serpong, they are the next set of malls in South Tangerang that will be covered on this page.
Since its opening in 2007, Summarecon Mal Serpong (SMS) has undergone significant expansion and now spans over 110,000 square meters of land in the heart of the Gading Serpong residential area. The mall attracts a large number of visitors, particularly on weekends. It boasts hundreds of tenants, including fashion boutiques, bag stores, shoe shops, sports outlets, electronic and home appliances stores, hair salons, jewelry stores, a bookstore, and stationery shops. Well-known brands such as Apple with iBox, Lego, Samsung, KKV, Huawei, Xiaomi, Uniqlo, H&M, Gramedia, Body Shop, and Star Department Store are among the tenants, along with many smaller specialty shops and boutiques that cater to the whole family. Additionally, it hosts a BCA branch office that operates until 10 p.m. on weekdays, a car dealership, and a cooking studio!
Shops are not the only feature in SMS. It has a variety of restaurants, ranging from Asian cuisines, such as Chinese, Indonesian, Vietnamese, Japanese, Korean, and Thai, to Western restaurants. If you are with a group of friends, you might like Food Temptation – the food court on the second floor – because you can order many different foods and dine together. Besides the food court, plenty of restaurants are on this second floor and at one section of the ground floor called Flavor & Field. However, many people prefer eating outside in the area called Downtown Walk, where you can eat inside the restaurants or in the open. Personally, I prefer to dine inside the restaurants because people tend to smoke in the outdoors. The cafes and restaurants in Downtown Walk open until late at night, or should I say early in the morning? ;-) especially on Saturday nights, when live music is played on the stages.
Live music is not the only form of entertainment that people enjoy in SMS. Watching the latest box office hits in the XXI multiplex cinemas or in the IMAX theater is a favorite pastime among visitors. Moreover, this mall has two game centers, Timezone and Lollipop Playland, that cater to teens and children.
One delightful activity, especially for kids, is feeding the Koi fish. Summarecon Mal Serpong has two koi ponds, one at each end of the mall. Both ponds are full of healthy, brightly colored koi fish; therefore, don't harm the fish by throwing anything into the pond. If you want to feed them, wait for the scheduled feeding time, which occurs twice every weekday or thrice every weekend. During these times, the keeper distributes fish food so you can feed those hungry fish. Many children excitedly await these feeding times to have the opportunity to feed the fish. :)
Nowadays, there isn't any shopping mall without a supermarket, including Summarecon Mal Serpong, which hosts The Farmers Market. It sells a variety of products, including fresh produce. If you come before noon, you can buy more fresh produce in the Sinpasa Modern Market, which is only several steps from SMS.
For a limited time ( October 26, 2023 - January 21, 2024), Kimshi Market at Summarecon Mall Serpong opens to the public. The location of Kimshi Market is at Fusion Alley, a narrow corridor near Farmers Supermarket. Usually, a narrow corridor like this leads to washrooms. However, this one particular corridor is different. It features facades of Japanese houses, which are beautifully decorated with colorful paper lanterns, providing visitors with plenty of photo opportunities. This alley ends at a spacious black room with many food stalls and tables and a stage at the front for K-pop and J-band performances. The room is painted black, so it looks like night. This food court serves Korean and Japanese street food.
Summarecon Digital Center, also known as SDC Serpong, is a shopping mall specializing in digital gadgets such as computers, laptops, tablets, smartphones, and drones. The upper floor of SDC is mainly used for the Learning Lab, where parents can attend workshops, and children can take classes in art, engineering, and coding. Additionally, the Farmers Market, a big supermarket for groceries and fresh produce, is on the ground floor, which makes it convenient for parents to buy groceries while waiting for their children in the Learning Lab.
SDC used to have an entertainment called "Evolution: Journey Of The Earth." It was a fun activity for families with young children where they could learn about the evolution of the Earth in an entertaining way.
The rest of the mall is occupied by various eateries. You can grab a quick bite in a small food court on the upper floor. On the other hand, if you prefer a more relaxed dining experience, you can enjoy your meals in one of the restaurants on the ground floor, which have views of the Scientia Square Park and the two outdoor stages.
Scientia Square Park is adjacent to SDC Serpong. It is an outdoor playground and park. You can rent inline skates and skateboard. Or you can try wall climbing. You can see rice fields, including water buffalo, corn fields, fish ponds, and a butterfly park. You can feed rabbits and fish. There are tracks for remote control cars, both for the off-road truck and racing cars. It's a great outdoor space for family playtime.
